Father David’s Sermon.
The 5th Sunday of Epiphany this year is Sexagesima, the Second to Last Sunday of Epiphany, which we celebrate as World Mission Sunday. As such, it is the first of two Sundays where the church calendar transitions from the solar calendar focused on Christmas to the lunar calendar focused on Easter, with one set of readings from each of those calendars. Its readings are:
|from the solar Christmas calendar,||from the lunar Easter calendar,|
|for the 5th Sunday of Epiphany:||for Sexagesima (Second to Last Sunday of Epiphany), World Mission Sunday:|
|2 Kings 4:8-37||Genesis 12:1-3|
|Psalm 142||Psalm 86:8-13|
|1 Corinthians 9:16-23||Revelation 7:9-17|
|Mark 1:29-39||Matthew 28:16-20|
For this Sunday, the bulletin cover and title came from the 5th Sunday of Epiphany, while the services used the readings for Sexagesima, World Mission Sunday; thus the Gospel from Matthew is heard in the sermon recording.
