This year the 6th Sunday of Epiphany is also the Last Sunday of Epiphany, Quinquagesima, which is celebrated as Transfiguration Sunday. (As the last Sunday before Lent, Quinquagesima is also called Shrove Sunday.) It is the last Sunday in the church calendar’s transition from the solar calendar focused on Christmas to the lunar calendar focused on Easter, with one set of readings from each of those calendars. Its readings are:
|from the solar Christmas calendar,||from the lunar Easter calendar,|
|for the 6th Sunday of Epiphany:||for the Last Sunday of Epiphany (Quinquagesima), Transfiguration Sunday:|
|2 Kings 5:1-15||1 Kings 19:9-18|
|Psalm 42:1-7(8-15)||Psalm 27|
|1 Corinthians 9:24-27||2 Peter 1:13-21|
|Mark 1:40-45||Mark 9:2-9|
For this Sunday, the bulletin cover, title and readings all came from the Last Sunday of Epiphany, with the sermon focused on the Transfiguration.
